Your Weekend Top 5
1
Rev your engines and get ready
for Thunder by the Bay.
Born to be wild? Then this is your weekend, because the 11th annual Thunder by the Bay motorcycle festival hits the streets of downtown Sarasota with parties, a bike show, motorcycle poker run and lots more. Proceeds benefit the Florida Center for Child and Family Development. Visit www.thunderbythebay.org for the complete schedule.

2 Young golf sensation (and IMG Academies alum) Paula Creamer returns to Lakewood Ranch this weekend for her third annual Celebrity Classic to benefit The First Tee Sarasota/Manatee. Friday night's the gala dinner, then on Saturday morning Paula and friends will lead a youth golf clinic, Brad Denton will demo amazing trick shots, The Golf Channel's Dr. Travis Fox presides over a celebrity shoot-out and there's even a  million-dollar hole-in-one challenge. The pro-am golf tournament is Sunday.

3 Hooray, the Moon over Myakka concerts, sponsored by the Friends of Myakka, are back. Mississippi Delta bluesman Ben Prestage headlines the first one Friday evening at Myakka River State Park. Tickets are just $8—the full moon's free. Bring your lawn chair and a blanket to snuggle in.

4 Sarasota Magazine invites you to join us Saturday evening at the Ritz for the annual Catholic Charities Ball, An Enchanted Evening in Ireland. Dinner, dancing, a live auction and Irish step dance demonstration. Last year 27,000 people in need in our area received assistance from this important nonprofit organization.

5 Parental warning: Reefer Madness the Musical opens tonight at Venice Theatre. Based on the cult 1936 film, the musical comedy takes a skewered look at what happens when clean-cut kids fall prey to…marijuana.

Next Week
  • The Asolo mainstage season is suddenly in full swing, and the early buzz is good. Our own Kay Kipling says the frothy production of Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid  “is probably just the cure for what ails you,” while the intriguing Inventing Van Gogh just opened, and over at the FSU Conservatory, Blur, a new comedy by playwright Melanie Marnich, is on the boards.

  • What a topical season for the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall lecture series, which kicks off Wednesday at the Van Wezel with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, followed by Newt Gingrich Jan. 28, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin Feb. 9 and Titanic discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard March 3. For ticket information, call (941) 925-1343.

  • And if you haven't seen the acrobatic dance troupe, Pilobolus www.pilobolus.com, you've missed a completely original, inventive and awe-inspiring performing arts experience. Go see them at the Van Wezel Monday night!

Our Real Estate Junkie visits a Sarasota School
of Architecture masterpiece, the Cocoon House.
A great deal for Sarasota retirees—and a dream rental for architecture buffs.  My poor sister. After 20 long years in an Illinois prison (no, she wasn't an inmate; she ran the educational programs) she and her husband, who also just retired, were looking forward to a wonderful new chapter in their lives. Then they got their latest Merrill Lynch statement. [more from Robert Plunket – Real Estate Junkie]
Sarasota's State Senator Nancy Detert is going into the budget crisis with some bold ideas.  I'm thankful this holiday season not to be in the shoes of a Florida legislator. [more from Kim Cartlidge – City Beat]
The year's taste picks. A tasteful year it has been.  While not every morsel has been top notch, some food finds have been overwhelmingly scrumptious from first bite. [more from Judi Gallagher – Foodie's Notebook]

January Issue Online

Our January issue is online, and it's something special—our 30th anniversary issue! It's a loving look back and a thoughtful look forward, from Robert Plunket's “Turning Points,” about 10 pivotal moments in our city's last three decades to an exceptional photo essay featuring the work of four great American photographers who were inspired by Sarasota. (Our cover was by one of them, the late Life magazine photographer Loomis Dean.) Be sure to check out our all-time favorite party pictures, from the gorgeous to the giggly, and see a slideshow of what might be the best Sarasota beach home, ever.
