In the slew of season announcements coming up right now, here’s another: The Sarasota Art Museum has announced its roster of exhibitions for the rest of 2022 and into 2023.

Museum executive director Virginia Shearer described the season as one that “brings a dynamic group of voices together for the new now” at an event for patrons and supporters. She added that some 30 artists in all will be presented, with works in an array of media.

The announcement was something of a first for the contemporary art museum, which opened in 2019 in the adapted historic Sarasota High School building, not long before the pandemic erupted. The museum has continued to present exhibitions in the past months but had not before unveiled a full season’s slate all at once.

Coming up first, April 2, is Daniel Lind-Ramos’ Las Tres Marias, comprised of two new assemblage works created specifically by the Puerto-Rican born artist: Baño de Maria and Maria Guabancex, as well as his Maria de los Sustentos. Lind-Ramos works with found and reclaimed objects, many collected in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria on his native island. He is a 2021 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and showed a sculpture at the 2019 Whitney Biennial. His work will be on view through Aug. 7 in the third-floor galleries.

Next up is State of The Art 2020: Constructs, opening April 24 to run through Sept. 11. In all, 33 artworks from 21 artists living and working across the country will be featured here, many of them from outside the nation’s traditional art centers. Organized by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, this exhibit will bring to life a wide range of media, from video to neon to installation to textile art, performance and more. Comprised of three sections—Planet, Place and Self—the exhibit will also showcase the performance art of Jody Kuehner and Joanna Keane Lopez, who were unable to fully present their work during the show’s run at Crystal Bridges earlier due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Katrina Coombs I M(Other): Threads of the Maternal Figure, will make its bow at SAM May 22-Oct. 2. The Jamaican-born artist works with textile and fiber, using finger-knitted and waffle-weave techniques. Twelve large-scale works will be shown.

The Ladd Brothers—William and Steven—whose show will be on view Sept. 4 through Feb. 5, 2023, specialize in making art with the community, Shearer explains. With backgrounds in fashion and contemporary design, they have become involved in producing “Scrollathons,” with input from hundreds of people, so this will provide opportunities for locals to get involved in the art-making process.

Journeys to Places Known and Unknown: Moving Images by Janet Biggs and peter campus (Oct. 2-Jan. 15) will fill the museum’s second floor with video art. It’s the first show at SAM devoted to video and digital media, and the first-time the two artists have collaborated.

Lastly, 14 female artists combine talents for A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard, Feb. 26-June 25, in an exhibit that pushes the boundaries between craft and fine art.

Other exhibits may be announced later as details are firmed up with the artists.
