Calendar Catch-up

By staff November 1, 2003

There've been some changes and additions to the busy Sarasota cultural season since our November season preview story was compiled. Here's a glimpse of what's new:

An Evening with Judy Collins and special guests, 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Van Wezel.

Other changes at the Van Wezel: singer-actor Mandy Patinkin will perform Jan. 20 (instead of the originally scheduled February date); Michael McDonald will appear Feb. 26; and George Benson has switched from a planned October date to an April 18 performance at the hall.

The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe's full season has been confirmed. Five Guys Named Moe, featuring blues man's Louis Jordan's greatest hits, will run Dec. 4-14, followed by Black Nativity, a song-play by Harlem Renaissance spirit Langston Hughes that tells the original story of the Nativity in scripture, verse, music and dance. That's onstage Dec. 18-21 and 27 and 28. Ain't Misbehavin' turns up Jan. 8-18, and Spunk, based on the work of Florida-born Zora Neale Hurston, April 8-18. All shows take place at FST's new SecondStage (formerly Theatre Works) at 1241 N. Palm Ave. Call 954-4651 for tickets.

And in case you were expecting to see Neil Simon's Fools onstage during the FSU/Asolo Conservatory season, you've been fooled. That show has been replaced by Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, which now runs March 3-21, followed by Shaw's Arms and the Man April 14-May 2. Box office number is 351-8000.
