Southwest Florida vintners and oenophiles should keep their eyes peeled for the black grapevine (Vitis vinifera Black Hamburgh). Considered a greenhouse plant in many grape-growing climates, the black grapevine will grow outdoors in Sarasota, flourishing in well-drained soil and full sun or partial shade. In September, after a long, hot summer, the vine will bear bunches of large, sweet fruits—perfect for plucking, or for making red dessert wines.
