Periodontal Laser Therapy

New research shows more Americans have gum disease than previously presumed. Despite its prevalence, more than 97 percent of those in need refuse the traditional treatment of periodontal flap surgery and risk tooth loss and other health challenges. Why? Patients report a perception that conventional “cut and sew” procedures are often painful, require weeks of healing and worse, are largely ineffective at curing periodontal disease long term.

Fortunately, there’s a solution. Dr. Lindsay B. Eastman, a gum specialist in Manatee County for more than 30 years, now offers state-of-the-art laser therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease. This “no cut, no sew” approach removes one of the largest barriers to much-needed gum care: fear. In addition, the results are just as successful and often longer lasting than previous conventional approaches.

Patients are relieved to discover that there’s a better solution to their dilemma, and the laser therapy has won raves. Now, more people than ever are receiving the care they need without any of the worry.

Eastman’s practice is one of only a few in the state to employ registered nurses in office for improved safety and comfort. He was among the first group of dentists in the U.S. trained in computer-guided implant surgery and offers extensive testing for metal allergies and microbiologic culturing to discover the underlying cause of periodontal infection and minimize the need for re-treatment. Dental Technology

"We have so many wonderful opportunities to help dental patients,” says Dr. Howard Chasolen. “Those with simple, uninvolved issues as well complex dental problems can be treated with precision and predictability.”  Whether you’re in search of a new beautiful smile with exquisite porcelain restorations, a bite reconstruction, dental implant treatment or even removable dentures, material and technological options are abundant. “It is the marriage of training, experience and a thorough knowledge of biomaterials, biomechanics and biology,” says Chasolen, “that allows your dentist to produce clean and long lasting results. “

But sometimes today's technologies can be confusing for patients. Take for example, implant dentistry and "Teeth in an Hour." "Teeth in an Hour" is a slogan made popular by the company Nobel BioCare. The concept is that you can get implant teeth in an hour.  This may be true, however there are many considerations.

Traditionally, dental implants were placed in the bone and left to heal for three to six months, depending on the quality and quantity of bone. "With advances in implant design, our understanding of biomechanics and biomaterials and CT scan imaging," explains Chasolen, "we can now place an implant and possibly place teeth on the implant that same day." However, these are very case specific instances, and to do so as a matter of routine or marketing attraction can lead to indiscriminate over-recommendation of this protocol. As always, technology is a good thing. "But as professionals, we must apply the technology to appropriate situations for the best long term outcomes for our patients."  For more information on advanced cosmetic, restorative and implant dental solutions, the perspective of a specialist or for second opinions, visit howardchasolen.com or call (941) 957-0063.

"Healthy Mouth, Long Life

Ongoing research proves there are many connections between a healthy mouth and your overall health. In fact, it’s proven that people who keep all of their teeth live an average of 10 years longer. Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common oral health issues, and if left untreated, can contribute to heart disease, diabetes and tooth loss. The good news is it can be reversed in the early stages or prevented entirely with regular preventive visits.
