Sarasota's Top 100 Stores

By Carol Tisch August 1, 2011

Necklace by Ivanka Trump, available at Queens’ Wreath JewelsFour years ago, we introduced the “Platinum 100,” a comprehensive listing of Sarasota’s top luxury retailers. Every year, we appraise each store, visiting each one—sometimes several times—to ensure that it continues to meet our criteria for a truly outstanding shopping experience, and we also scout out new boutiques as they open. And every year, in this city known for its luxurious lifestyle, limiting our list to 100 bastions of retail luxury becomes more challenging. Our retailers have responded to a tough economy with courage and creativity. They are flourishing because they have figured out exactly how the Gulf Coast’s most discerning shoppers want to live and dress today, and they’ve fine-tuned their assortments accordingly.

This guide—which includes listings to top auto and yacht dealers and art galleries as well as our 100 retailers—will introduce you to an astonishing array of treasures and surprises. We’ve analyzed product craftsmanship, access to luxury brands, atmosphere and expertise, reviewing fabulous retailers from Anna Maria Island and Englewood to Main Street Sarasota. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or longtime resident, the joys you’ll discover are limited only by your curiosity and fortitude.

The Platinum 100 antiques

The Gallery Scene

Sarasota’s reputation for sophisticated living embraces not only fashion, jewelry and home décor, but fine art as well. We’re blessed with a number of commercial galleries here selling a wide variety of work by local and national artists. And we’re home to several noncommercial galleries, too, including Art Center Sarasota, Selby Gallery on the Ringling College campus, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts and, of course, the Ringling Museum of Art, which started our connection with the visual arts in the first place.

The artists’ colony of Towles Court, just west of U.S. 301 between Adams and Morrill streets, is also worth a visit, especially during monthly gallery walks. And the biennial Sarasota Season of Sculpture (starting in November) turns our downtown bayfront into a gallery of large-scale sculpture by artists from around the world. Many of our art galleries are strollably located either downtown or on St. Armands Circle; here are some of the most notable.
