When Kevin Stalker first went to the Boys and Girls Clubs at age nine, it was a refuge from a home that included violence and drugs. Nine years later, Kevin is honorary winner of the clubs’ regional Youth of the Year competition, with a $5,000 college scholarship. “They don’t usually give an honorary award, but they said my speech moved the crowd so much, they had to,” says a proud Kevin. A senior at Booker High, Kevin now counsels kids much like himself at the Lee Wetherington branch. His goal? To someday become a Boys and Girls Clubs CEO. “I wouldn’t feel that way if it wasn’t for what they’ve given me,” he says. “I love seeing a smile after I’ve helped someone.”
