Herb Ritts was a California kid who grew up to photograph some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities, along with famous fashion models and other beautiful bodies. He often photographed his arresting subjects in iconic California sunshine, sometimes on the beach or in the desert, giving a fresh and accessible modern image to classic Hollywood glamour. Ritts died at the age of 50 in 2002; now an exhibition showcasing his distinctive images, curated by the Getty Museum, travels to Sarasota. Herb Ritts: L.A. Style is on view at the Ringling Museum Feb. 22 through May 19, providing a chance to see how one man’s eye could leave such a lasting impression on ours.
