Hot Dish: Michael’s On East’s Butter-Roasted Flounder
From the changing monthly global menu at Michael’s came a dish that’s earned a spot on the permanent lunch menu. Tender, light, buttery flounder fillets are perfectly balanced with a hint of grain mustard in a brown sage butter sauce. The Brussels sprouts at the bottom of the dish are as delightful as the toasted almonds on top. Michael’s On East, 1212 S. East Ave., Sarasota, (941) 366-0007.
Fresh & Local
A favorite stand at the downtown farmer’s market, Peperonata Pasta and Empanadas by Stef has opened a retail store, offering imported olive oils and balsamic vinegar, more than 20 flavors of ravioli, gnocchi, and pesto and mushroom sauces that make a pasta dinner simple yet authentic. Desserts like arroz con leche, too. 4141 S. Tamiami Trail, (941) 870-2729.
The recent South Beach Food and Wine Festival starred flavored and spiced rums, with agave nectar, fresh coconut milk and passion juice all being shaken and served with shaved ice. Plus we have a great local source in the award-winning Siesta Key Rum company.
