Sarasota County Reports 251 New Covid-19 Cases

The county's daily positivity rate is higher than 10 percent for the first time since July.

Sarasota County reported 251 new Covid-19 cases on Monday and Manatee County reported 178.

The state of Florida reported 7,350 positive new Covid-19 cases on Monday, with Sarasota County accounting for 251 of those and Manatee County accounting for 178. For the first time since July, both counties also reported a daily positivity rate of higher than 10 percent. On Tuesday, Sarasota Memorial Hospital's patient census included 57 Covid-positive patients, 12 of whom were convalescing in the ICU. Sarasota County Schools reports that as of Tuesday evening, 21 staff members and and 44 students have tested positive for the virus and are currently in isolation. The Manatee County school district reported seven new positive cases as of Tuesday.

The state and local increase is reflective of a national trend, with the U.S. reporting 166,266 new cases on Monday (an 82 percent week over a 14-day period) on Monday and 796 deaths (a 40 percent increase over the same timeframe). Since the pandemic began, more than 11.3 million people have contracted the virus and 247,938 people have died from it.
