Sarasota Memorial Health Care System Welcomes Record Number of Leap Day Babies (With More to Come)
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System labor and delivery teams at both the Sarasota and Venice hospital campuses helped families celebrated the births of numerous Leap Day babies today, with a few parents sharing photos of their new bundles of joy in special Leap Year-themed outfits provided by SMH.
According to SMH, the chances of a baby being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461. So far, the SMH Sarasota campus has welcomed seven new “leaplings," and there are eight additional mothers currently in labor. Meanwhile, the SMH Venice campus celebrated its first-ever Leap Day baby, since the campus only opened in 2021.
That means 2024 is going to be a record year for Leap Day babies at SMH. Previously, the healthcare system's Sarasota campus delivered seven babies on Leap Day in 2016, and eight babies on Leap Day in 2020.
