The cast received well -deserved standing ovation- this

It may be because I am from NY and my view of theater is jaded... but this was one of the worst plays I have ever seen. Let me preface that my review has nothing to do with 9/11. Please do not connect the two. The writing of this story was forced and usually unbalanced between what should be natural and then overly preachy. The jokes were spoken by the actors as they almost winked to the audience. In fact one out-of-left-field joke about Renee Zellweger's lips was played to us by a character that never spoke to the fourth wall. About the fourth wall - the main character speaks to the audience throughout which made trying to connect to the core of the story: a family dealing with the after-effects of 9/11 - very difficult. The writing seemed to come from a final project of a drama student. The acting was horrible and that's what they were doing: they were acting. I was watching actors, not characters. The grandmother was supposed to be the comic relief, the jaded wife was the loud mouth,... and the actor playing the younger brother spoke with stuttered dialogue where you could actually see him counting out how long to pause between "What the?... When?..." Just as the play began, the actors playing the main character and the therapist/husband immediately caused me to look at my watch. And I am not alone in this sentiment, as my girlfriend and I kept rolling our eyes at each other and too checking my watch. The actor playing the therapist/husband definitely needs to go back to school or never act again. The direction was weak, the climax during Thanksgiving was a scene I have seen a thousand-times over, and the fact there was no intermission felt like I was trapped like the man strapped to his chair in "A Clockwork Orange". Just because it is about 9/11, does not mean it makes for a good story. The tickets were a gift, so it's a good thing I didn't shell out money for this. Don't waste your time.
