Towles Court is Sarasota’s arts and crafts district, several square blocks of homes, mostly vintage, that have been remodeled to become galleries and shops and restaurants. Though its economic groundings have seemed shaky at times over the years, it’s established itself as a place to spend a couple of hours wandering around, checking out what’s for sale and maybe having lunch.

With special zoning to accommodate this pleasant mish-mash of uses, it’s become a viable place to live downtown and you never know what you’re going to find for sale. Take this mixed-use building at 1947 Morrill Street. It has a 2,200 square foot main building, which the current owner uses as a residence, plus a 1,000-square-foot “carriage house” out back which is rented out to three different tenants who use the spaces as galleries.

Spacious kitchen.

It’s not old (it was built in 1998), and the interiors are open, pleasant, and modern. You’ll find a spacious kitchen, a claw foot tub in the master bath, and Mexican tile floors. There are lots of windows and though the lot is small (0.11 acres) it has several nice patios around the perimeter and a balcony or two overlooking the big oak trees.

The bathroom features a clawfoot tub.

Towles Court is famous for its over-the-top color schemes, and this house is no exception. I counted six different colors used on the exteriors alone. It’s a very Key West kind of place, a short walk from downtown, with a variety of places to eat, from sandwich shops to the very popular Indigenous, considered one the best restaurants in town.
