Even though one of them was suddenly canceled under mysterious circumstances, the building of a batch of downtown condos is proceeding apace, and here’s the one that’s going up next door to the offices of Sarasota Magazine. It’s called SanSara and it will replace the forlorn ruins of that gas station that’s been at the corner of Pineapple and Ringling ever since most of us remember.

SanSara is designed by local architect Gary Hoyt (his wife Maureen owns Optional Art, the jewelry store) and it’s a 17-unit, 10-story building, modern in style, with vaguely Asian influences. Most floors have two units, but there’s also a big penthouse that takes up the entire top floor.

These renderings are from Unit 602, which has three bedrooms and three baths in 2,270 square feet. (There’s also a 405-square-foot terrace.) The ceilings are 10 feet high, the floors are mostly wood, and the most interesting feature is something referred to as a “retractable wall” that opens up somehow, uniting your living space and your terrace.

There’s also an amenity level on the second floor, with a pool, cabanas, a spa, etc., plus the obligatory fire pit. (Fire pits have taken the town by storm; every new home or building has one.) According to the PR, SanSara has applied Feng Shui principles to many areas of the building.

I can certainly vouch for the location, having worked in this very spot for the past fifteen years. It’s on the southern edge of downtown, just far enough removed from the complaints you hear about Main Street. Best of all, Nancy’s Bar-B-Q is right across the street. And Burns Court Cinema is just a block away.

300 S. Pineapple, #602. Priced (pre-construction) at $1,499,900. For more information, call Jonathan Abrams of Michael Saunders and Co. at (941) 232-2868.
