Here’s something that’s impossible to find anymore—a real Cracker cottage from the old days, right in the middle of a decent, convenient neighborhood. It was built back  in 1929 for the manager of one of the big orange groves that used to fill that part of town. (It’s on Florinda St., a couple of blocks east of the trail and just north of Proctor Road.)

Living room with fireplace.

Like all Cracker houses, it’s rather small—880 square feet, with 2 bedrooms and one bath. There’s a fireplace in the living room. The kitchen is relatively spacious, with a farmhouse feel, and metal cabinets that look like they date from a 1950s remodel. It’s thought that the original wooden floors are underneath the linoleum and carpet.

Period details, including the home’s original clawfoot tub.

The home is full of period touches, still there after all these years. Check out the screen door, the glass doorknobs, the bathroom sink and medicine chest. The original claw foot bath tub is out in the garage. The house is built on a foundation rather than a slab, so that it can “breathe.” The lot is rather spare at the moment but it’s large and could be nicely landscaped. And the price can’t be beat—they’re asking $90,000.
