How did you meet?
We worked together for about three months before we started dating, and were a little worried about [how it would be perceived by our peers], but it ended up working out! Working together was such a nice thing because I got to really see what he was like—who he was, how he dealt with stressful situations. And we dated for three years before we got engaged.
How did Billy propose?
I had always dreamed of getting married at Cà d’Zan—Billy and I had even talked about it before he proposed, but I wasn’t sure it was doable since the site books so far in advance. Then, when he asked me to marry him, Billy told me that he and my family had planned the whole thing in advance and had already booked Cà d’Zan. It was like, “Surprise! Not only do you have this gorgeous diamond, but I’ve booked the location of your dreams.”
What was the planning process like?
I worked with Sarah Tucker, one of my bridesmaids—we’re both crazy planners and organizers, so it was the two of us putting everything together.
Camilyn Beth [a local designer], who was also one of the bridesmaids, made Sarah’s dress, her own dress and the mother-of-the-bride dress. The other girls bought their dresses elsewhere but stuck to our color scheme. I think the colors make the photos look so cool—when I thought about them, I realized how much I liked the colors of Cà d’Zan itself: You feel like you’re in Europe when you’re there, and I loved that aspect of it and carried it through everything else.
We chose Treviso for food because it’s the restaurant on site. A family friend made the cakes—we had three in different sizes and shapes based off three of my favorites that I’d found online.
And our photographer, Jessica Lorren, I had met years ago, but hadn’t spoken with in a long time. Then she was referred to me by a friend who’d gotten married, and I started following her blog and loved her photos. I knew I wanted to splurge on photos—they’re what you have forever, and I love how light and airy and soft they are.
Any tips for future brides and grooms?
We did a “first look” [before the wedding]—Jessica pulled Billy aside before the ceremony and he was waiting for me; it was the first time he’d seen me that day. All the angst of the day and the stress of getting ready melted away—I looked at him and just said, “I’m so relieved!” It was so calming and so nice to have a minute alone together—he even started crying! I would absolutely recommend that everyone do this—there’s something so nice about having a minute to yourselves before all the craziness.
What was the most memorable thing about your wedding?
It’s just so overwhelming having everyone you love and some people you never get to see there with you at the same time. It’s amazing.
