Selby Gallery. Part II of the Ringling School's annual faculty exhibitions highlights the work of instructors in illustration, graphics and interactive communication, photography and digital imaging and liberal arts. Casual Classic/Concert Lite/Enchanted Evening. Call it what you will-the theme for the Florida West Coast Symphony's opening "Lighter Fare" concert is "From Sea to Shining Sea," and it includes works from Sousa, Berlin and Aaron Copland, among others. Sarasota Pops at Sunset. Bring out the blankets and the picnic baskets for this annual concert from the Florida West Coast Symphony. You can arrive starting at 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at Phillippi Estate Park to stake out your spot, but the music will begin closer to sunset. Information: 953-3434.

Florida West Coast Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra presents a "Mendelssohn Marathon" consisting of three separate and distinct concerts, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23, 25 and 27 at the Sarasota Opera House. Works range from his Midsummer Night's Dream, to his Hebrides Overture to his Symphony No. 4 ("Italian"). Information: 953-3434.

Sarasota Opera Fall Concert. Get "Up Close, Informal, On Stage," with baritone William Andrew Stuckey (who appeared in last season's Le Trouvère) in this new offering from the Sarasota Opera, which features artists singing their personal favorites with the audience seated onstage at the Opera House. Spyro Gyra/Average White Band. These two '70s-born bands (the first famous for its instrumentals, the second for its R&B flavor) perform starting at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Van Wezel. Information: 953-3368.

Theater

The Threepenny Opera. Get ready to stroll the streets of Soho with Polly Peachum, Lucy Brown, and of course that dread "Mack the Knife" in this Weill-Brecht collaboration, onstage through Oct. 6 at the Players of Sarasota. Information: 365-2494.

Suds. A campy '60s-era musical set in a laundromat, Suds overflows with songs like Please, Mr. Postman, Johnny Angel and It's My Party. Through Nov. 10 at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre. Information: 366-5454.

Animal Crackers. One of the Marx Brothers' early stage and film hits (you know, the one with Groucho as that great African explorer, Captain Spaulding) opens Venice Little Theatre's mainstage season, Oct. 1-20. Information: 488-1115.

Mother Hicks. A comedy by Susan Zeder about three losers in a difficult time. Onstage at the Island Players, Oct. 3-13. Information: 778-5755.

A Raisin in the Sun. In a joint venture with the Westcoast Black Theater Troupe, Theatre Works offers this Lorraine Hansberry play about an African-American family's internal and external struggles, tentatively set to run Oct. 4-20. Information: 952-9170.

The Man with the Plastic Sandwich. A comedy by Roger Karshner, onstage at the Venice Golden Apple Oct. 16-Nov. 23. Information: 484-7711.

Peter Pan. Your journey to Neverland begins Oct. 24 and ends Nov. 10, with the Manatee Players Riverfront Theatre the embarking point for this musical based on the classic James M. Barrie tale. Information: 748-5875.

Opal's Husband. Another installment in the long-running Opal Kronkie series by John Patrick, this one features the eccentric Opal involved with a husband and his jealous daughter. Onstage Oct. 30-Nov. 17 at the Lemon Bay Playhouse. Information: 475-6756.
