Best of the Best - 2003

By staff May 1, 2003

After nearly a quarter century of covering this town from top to bottom, we've learned a thing or two about the best Sarasota has to offer. We know we have Sarasota's best readers, and you're eager to help us tell the rest of the world what's best about our city, from dining and shopping to heroes and highlights.

And this year's "Best of the Best" competition was-well, the best ever, as paper ballots poured into our office in record numbers and hundreds of you took advantage of our online voting system, logging in thousands of choices.

Tabulating all those votes is no simple task, especially when the answers of some mischievous spellers required extensive analysis-sometimes by more than two people. But we persevered, determined to give every qualified ballot its due and ensure that every citizen's voice be heard.

So here they are, your picks for the best of everything that Sarasota has to offer. The top vote-getters are listed first; finalists are shown below in alphabetical order. Because of several ties, some categories have more than two finalists.

Congratulations to each of our winners, and to each of you as well, for your continued support and enthusiasm. And be sure to tune into contest co-sponsor WWSB Channel 40's "Best of the Best" series, which begins May 2 and runs every Friday throughout the month on the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT (Opened in 2002)

The Bonefish Grill

Pricey, but worth the indulgence, Sarasota's premier steakhouse features a majestic décor, professional wait staff and a signature filet so tender it slices with a fork. We like to start with the lobster bisque and end with bread pudding, all complemented by an impressive array of wines and a la carte sides.

BEST PLACE FOR DESSERT

Euphemia Haye

Finalists: Epicure, Yoder's

Euphemia's Haye Loft is a loving ode to the self-indulgent sugar glutton in all of us. Enjoy desserts and coffee in overstuffed sofas while soothing jazz lingers in the background. Feeling decadent? Skip dinner and head upstairs first.

BEST PLACE FOR SALAD

Sweet Tomatoes

Finalists: Columbia, Crispers

It's no surprise that the winner of the best healthy food would take the salad award, especially since the salad bar here spans what seems like the length of a city block.

BEST SUSHI

BEST BURGER

Patrick's

Finalists: Chili's, Hob Nob

Regulars at the friendly restaurant and bar at the corner of Five Points downtown swear by its juicy beef burgers, grilled to such perfection that it's hard to keep your tablemates from swiping bites.

BEST CATERER

Michael's On East

Finalists: Morton's Catering, Nellie's Deli

For years, Michael Klauber and Phil Mancini have been creating gourmet cuisine for special events that range from intimate business luncheons to grand fund-raisers and weddings. As good as the food is the professional staff that prepares and presents it with signature aplomb.

BEST DELI

Nellie's Deli

A deli is where we go when we need something good, quick and reasonable. Nellie's is a hometown favorite that manages to be all three-and consistently creative as well.

BEST GOURMET MARKET

Morton's Market

Finalists: Granary, Publix

Even with a wealth of selections that rival those in any big city, Morton's retains the feel of a neighborhood grocery. The aisles can be tight when downtown employees jostle for ready-made dinners on their way home from work, but the staff is hospitable and the food first-rate.

BEST BAKERY

Publix

Finalists: C'est la Vie, Panera

How lucky are we that the best bakery in town resides inside the biggest and best-managed supermarket. Even the pickiest purists line up for these fresh goods, from signature birthday cakes to an abundance of breads, muffins, pastries and more.

BEST MARTINI

Espresso Martini at Fred's

Finalists: Chocolate Martini at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, Espresso Martini at Silver Cricket

How about a drink that promises a jolt of caffeine with its relaxing vodka base? It may be a mixed message, but voters went wild for Fred's mix of this seductively sweet beverage. Just be sure to check your upper lip for a cocoa mustache.

BEST BEER SELECTION

The Ale House

Finalists: Bennigans, Sarasota Brewing Company

A cool draught is a lifesaver in Sarasota's heat, thanks to these winners. The Ale House comes out on top with a heady selection of brews, including the addition this year of that ancient Belgian beauty, Stella Artois.

BEST ART, ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS

BEST PERFORMING ARTS GROUP

Asolo Theatre

Finalists: Florida Studio Theatre, Sarasota Ballet of Florida

The verdict is in: With a strong production of the courtroom drama Inherit the Wind and a moving Brighton Beach Memoirs, among other offerings this season, the Asolo (also last year's winner) kept its place in your hearts. Now if it can somehow hold on to the Conservatory.

BEST LOCAL ACTOR OR ACTRESS

Sharon Scott

Finalists: Carolyn Michel, Bradford Wallace

By the voting deadline, Scott's big voice and big presence hadn't appeared in a theater company production this season, but her fans have not forgotten her. Maybe this win will encourage Scott and local theaters to join forces again.

BEST BLACK TIE EVENT

UnGala Gala

Finalists: Mistletoe Ball, Out-of-Door Extravaganza

Every year the top-drawer committee working to present the UnGala strives to come up with something new and different in the world of benefit bashes, and you all agree they again succeeded. The glorious setting of the Ringling Museum's courtyard and loggias doesn't hurt, either.

BEST PLACE TO WORK OUT

YMCA

Finalists: Gold's Gym, Southside Athletic Club

We're still discovering the benefits of all those machines in the workout room at the renovated Berlin Branch, while our young ones can't get enough of the water slides at the Selby Aquatic Center by Palmer Ranch. And downtown's location is so convenient we really have no excuse for not getting there more often-darn it.

BEST FESTIVAL OR SPECIAL EVENT

Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix

Finalists: Sarasota Film Festival, A Taste of Sarasota

You love the roar of those big powerboat engines (and maybe the bikini-clad young ladies who pose with their owners?), but this year's expanded film fest and the opportunity to sample all those goodies from local restaurants also made your motors race.

BEST PLACE TO WATCH A PERFORMANCE

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

Finalists: FSU/Asolo Center, Sarasota Opera House

The legal battle over our lavender lovely's renovation continues, but that doesn't stop audiences from pouring into the hall for big shows like Riverdance and Rent and big stars like Tony Curtis and Bill Cosby. Maybe the new dining service from Café L'Europe in the Grand Foyer has something to do with that.

BEST PLACE FOR LIVE MUSIC

Five O'Clock Club

Finalists: Gator Club, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

When the cars start lining up on Hillview in the evening, you know performers like bluesman Tom Cat Blake or reggae/ska masters Strangeways are playing at the Five-O. It's intimate, it's a little noisy, and it's fun.

BEST ATTRACTION FOR KIDS

G.WIZ

Sure, kids love it, but, hey, we grownups like it, too. Personally, we love moving around the little action figures and Lego pieces to make those animated movies, and the butterfly garden's nice, too.

BEST PLACE TO HIKE, CANOE OR KAYAK

Myakka State Park

Finalists: Lido Beach, Oscar Scherer State Park

Myakka is not just a journey in space, it's a time trip as well. Once you get into the heart of this 28,000-acre wildlife refuge (the state's largest park), you're in Florida before man's arrival, where bobcats roam, owls hoot, and maybe even the mighty panther prowls. Don't say we didn't warn you.
