At Home in Florida

By staff October 1, 2005

Design experience: Twenty-five years, 17 in Sarasota. Style defined: I'm happiest working in a traditional or transitional style that references a Florida look. Color is my signature. My home is: A 10-year-old West Indies-style home inspired by a vacation to Nevis. Favorite room: My cozy mahogany paneled den. I curl up with my two dogs and two cats for a glass of wine or to read. Favorite places to shop: Thom Down Antiques in Lakeland, Miami Circle in Miami, all of Atlanta, Blue Moon on Pineapple Avenue in Sarasota. I love shopping in Key West, especially Fast Buck Freddie's. Recent great finds and purchases: At the Green Street Gallery in Key West I bought a Peter Vey painting of a Cuban sponge boat that's making me want to redo my living room to match the colors in it. Where to save on the design budget: In the guest bedrooms and baths, because there are so many great-looking, high-quality furnishings that don't cost a fortune. Save the big investments for the rooms you live in most. The essence of a wonderful home is: Light and sound quality. When you get those two elements right, you've got comfort and warmth, and that makes a home successful.
