When Lusia Shafran and Ken Landry created the outdoor living spaces for Landmark Development Group’s Grand Cayman showcase home at the new Lake Club at Lakewood Ranch, they began as they always do: by imagining how the property would be used.

Shafran, principal of Landmark Design Studio (the building firm’s interior design arm), and Landry, landscape architect for the parent company, hadn’t worked within the West Indies design genre before, but found the theme lent itself perfectly to the indoor/outdoor lifestyle they envisioned for the home.

The result is a casually elegant, chameleon-like space made for grand parties, one that several generations can use comfortably at one time. “We planned it for everything from a garden wedding for 200 to a Fourth of July family picnic,” Shafran says. Indeed, while Landry planned quiet places for grandparents, conversation areas for adults and active zones for kids, Shafran pushed the envelope with an outdoor parlor so luxurious, “the furnishings could all be used inside.”

The blue and cream color scheme seamlessly integrates indoors and out with practical Sunbrella fabrics dressed up with custom-embroidered shells.

Rich, dark mahogany that evokes the islands is used extensively indoors and on protected outdoor dining chairs. It’s mimicked with matching stain on teak “parlor” furniture.

Graceful colonnade arches define the patio, their clean classic looks betraying the remote-controlled retractable screens artfully concealed within.

An outdoor fireplace is clad in the same Florida Keys coral that is used on the patio columns and on the front of the home for authentic character.

Patio floors of sand-set shell stone visually relate to interior stone floors, providing an uninterrupted flow and integration of indoor and outdoor space.

Dark-stained cypress ceiling and rattan fan recall the resorts of the West Indies, and add to the dramatic interior look and feel of the patio space.

Wicker accessories, blue ceramic stools and stone-based glass dining table are all indoor products adventurously used under patio cover.
