Sarasota's Design Trends

Hip renovators take note. Today’s wallpapers are unique and often startling statements of style, from retro-psychedelic designs to Zen-like wilderness prints and three-dimensional wood, leather and fabric wall panels. Talk about your modern hang-ups!

Flavor Paper is a New Orleans company that creates one-of-a-kind vintage and contemporary wall coverings. Shown here is party-ready Pleasure Dome in bold, geometric black, white and gray. Hand silk-screened to order, it’s available at $200 a roll from www.flavorpaper.com, (504) 944-0447.

Trend-conscious clients such as W Hotels and Urban Outfitters are flocking to Wallter, 3-D panels that affix to your walls with easy-to-apply adhesive backing. The Hex kit has eight hexagons to paint and arrange any way you like. At $42, it’s a fun way to bring an unexpected design element to any room. To order a kit, visit Wallter’s parent company at www.foldbedding.com.

Bring the wild outdoors inside with striking flora- and fauna-inspired wallpaper by Los Angeles-based Cavern. Check out Blackbird in Kraft, a starkly dramatic pattern of blackbirds perched on tree limbs. Available at $155 a roll from www.cavernhome.com.

In extreme close-up, Peekaboo in Tux by Twenty 2 evokes elaborately scrolled iron fences. But in its execution, the paper is completely modern, just as designers and spouses Kyra and Robertson Hartnett intended when they founded the Brooklyn-based company to fill a void in contemporary designs. While nothing beats classy black and white, this pattern is also available in bubblegum pink, cherry lime rickey, ice and buttercream. The pattern retails for $171 a roll from www.twenty2.net.

Inspired by 1920s flapper dresses, English designer Tracy Kendall’s sequin wallpapers are feminine, flirty and fun. If you’re not quite ready to go this glamorous all around, use the paper to accent shelves, doors or niches. At $380 a roll, it’s pricey, but the glitter factor is high. To order, visit www.tracykendall.com.

Somewhere in the intersection of fabric, wallpaper and artwork are London-based Finnish designer Anne Kyyro Quinn’s gorgeous wool-and-felt wall panels, with eye-popping colors, textures and shapes. From $400 per square yard. Visit www.annekyyroquinn.com.

Your home is your palace; treat your walls accordingly. Vahallan Papers’ Black Reserve is a line of deep, gleaming metallics that impart a truly regal air. Atlantic foam, black cherry, silver frost and Azena gold are just some of the hues. The papers can be ordered in sheets, cut into geometric shapes, or adorned with accent designs. From $3 per square foot; available locally at M&M Wall Coverings & Blinds, 4801 S. Tamiami Trail. (941) 925-7800.
