Named for the sun-blocking sombreros that can be woven from its fronds, the hat palm of the Dominican Republic (Sabal dominguensis) lacks the yellow petioles of its taller, more common Puerto Rican cousin (Sabal causiarum). This Caribbean native will slowly grow up to 25 feet high, but because the hat palm won’t tolerate temperatures below 25 degrees, you won’t find it growing farther north than Sarasota’s tropical climate.
