What was once an outlet mall has morphed into the spiffy new Shoppes at UniversityCenter, abuzz with unique stores, pampering salons and the coolest women’s gym around. But this mall at University Parkway and Cooper Creek Boulevard has also become a foodies’ paradise, with fine dining, a world-class demonstration kitchen, Zagat-rated burgers and an 8,000-label wine superstore, Total Wine & More, set to open this fall.

Who’s In Store

Michael and Kathy Bush enjoy blurring the lines between business and pleasure, and it’s obvious at Home Resource, their chic-as-Miami furniture store. The lovers of performing arts sometimes convert their showroom into a live stage for performances of works by Williams, Chekov and more.

Now their new Improv at Home Resource promises entertainment as diverse as the store’s contemporary furniture, which skews from affordable brands with cutting-edge European flair to coveted Knoll design classics and ultra-hip fashion from Adriana Hoyos, Latin America’s rising star.

With their new 100 Central condo outfitted in the stuff they sell, the couple lives and breathes contemporary design 24/7. But they still find time for one extracurricular passion. “Kathy’s an accomplished sailor and president of the Florida’s Women’s Sailing Association. In the store we’re partners, but on our boat I’m the galley wench; I get the beer,” says Michael, the former head of Domino’s Pizza UK, and current president of Sarasota’s Downtown Merchants Association. —Carol Tisch

Home Resource, 741Central Ave., Sarasota (941) 366-6690.

Can’t Live Without: “Fringe theater: We loved it in

London and we’re re-creating the experience right in our store,” says Michael Bush. During live performances, friends and customers relax in furniture like Knoll’s iconic Platner lounge chair ($1,570).

What this town needs: “As a community, we need to support retail on Main Street, and to make a point of buying downtown,” Bush says. Bright ideas like Kartell’s Toobe lamp (table, $310; floor, $620), are electrifying reasons to shop his store.

Café Ole Ecuadorian design sensation Adriana Hoyos has two eponymous Miami showrooms, but Home Resource sells all her hot new looks, including the Café dining table ($4,301) of open pore seike wood.

Art of Gifting reaches new heights with M.L. Gosling’s upscale brands like annieglass and Edgar Berebi, and one-off treasures in ceramic and art glass. Owner Marilyn Taksen says the store is an outgrowth of her love of crafting, and what she calls “uniquities” (pieces you won’t see anywhere else), like this leaf tea pot by local artist Ki Woon ($350). M.L Gosling, 43.S. Palm Ave., Sarasota (941) 366-2500.
