Decorating with Pillows

Craving a new look for your living room or den? New pillows are a simple solution that can bring a fresh and updated look to your home says interior designer Barbara Vanderkolk Gardner. Pillows run from simple to extravagant and the style chosen should depend on the type of couch. For a solid couch, go with bolder patterned pillows. For a busier sofa, choose one color in the pattern and highlight it through solid or tone-on-tone pillows in that hue. Scattering oversized pillows around the fireplace or coffee table can add additional seating. This adds to a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to mix shapes, sizes and patterns. Contrasting shapes, colors and sizes bring interest and excitement to a family room.  Pillows, of course, also finish off a beautiful bedroom.  Decorative shams, pretty pillowcases, and coordinating accent pillows are an impressive part of an inviting bed design.  Mix and match with your comforter, dust ruffle, and accent throw.

Jonathan Parks Architect AIA Awards Winner

The American Institute of Architects’ Gulf Coast Chapter recently announced the recipients of the 2010 design awards. In the “Award of Excellence” category, Jonathan Parks Architect AIA took the Honor Award for design of the Noel Residence and the Merit Award for design of Ivory Lounge, both located in Sarasota. Juror David Zahle, partner at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in Copenhagen, one of Europe’s most innovative firms, commended the design of the Noel Residence for its simple architectural language and fluidity of space.  Zahle also recognized Ivory Lounge explaining that, “it is perhaps the most precise work of the projects turned in. It’s super simple, but at the same time it frames the life inside and it focuses the experience of entering into the space…I think it’s a beautiful project.” The Gulf Coast AIA represents architects from five southwest counties.
