LEAD-BASED PAINT

MyGreenBuildings, the Tampa Bay Area’s leader in green construction, offers information and services regarding new laws for construction and renovation. Lead-based paint has been used for hundreds of years because it’s durable and produces vivid colors. But when it deteriorates or is disturbed during construction, it contaminates the environment with lead. Lead has been found to be a serious health hazard, and lead-based paint was banned in 1978.

But most buildings built prior to 1978 still contain the old lead-based paint. When these buildings are renovated or repaired, hazardous levels of lead often contaminate the dust that is generated by the construction. This lead-contaminated dust is especially toxic to children, pregnant women and animals, as well as the construction workers who spend significant time around the dust.

Because of this health hazard, the EPA has mandated new regulations governing how renovations and repairs are to be conducted in homes, schools and childcare facilities built prior to 1978. As of April 2010, federal law requires contractors to be trained and certified by the EPA before performing work where lead based paint is present. Fines of $32,500 can be cited for not complying with this regulation.

MyGreenBuildings now has EPA-trained and certified renovators on staff.  If you’re planning to renovate or have repairs done on your building and want to find out if the new EPA regulations apply, contact MyGreenBuildings at (941)366-7280.
