Who's in Store

The quintessential California girl, former L.A. fashion stylist Lissa Murphy has made her shop, Jane, an outpost of Bohemian-chic West Coast style. A coterie of loyal fans has embraced the look, which transitions as beautifully to Sarasota’s lifestyle as Murphy did when she, daughter Elle, and husband Jim LaClair (a Sarasota native) relocated here from Santa Monica a few years back.

“Sarasota’s a great place to raise kids, and a great place to be an entrepreneur,” declares Murphy, who excels at ferreting out new trends and emerging designers. “We’re definitely fashion-forward and very California.” Many of the store’s hit sellers took a while to catch on until customers saw them in People StyleWatch, Murphy confides. “Now they don’t need StyleWatch to legitimize my picks. They trust me because I buy what I love,” she says.

Beach Style Watch: Murphy faves: Jane’s signature sweater/shawl ($200) from Goddis: “beachy—great for after yoga or out for date night.” Long crinkle cotton dresses ($185) from Jen’s Pirate Booty: “We can’t keep them in stock—they’re effortlessly sexy.”

What women want: Mellisa Odabash straw cowboy hats worn by celebs from Elle Macpherson to Catherine Zeta-Jones ($100) positively fly off the shelves, as do the James Perse tank dress ($185), racer back tank ($52) and Linea Pelle braided corset belt ($180) she’s wearing above.

Can’t live without: “Running. It keeps me mentally fit; I need it to survive. And my ‘car pieces’: I keep car earrings [gold mesh by Melinda Maria], a sweater [Goddis], and blush bronze highlighter [Trish McEvoy or Bobbie Brown] in the console of my car. I can feel crappy, put them on and feel stunning,” Murphy says.
