Three Fab '50s Homes

By Robert Plunket September 8, 2010

In our October issue we’re featuring three great 1950s homes currently on the market, so I thought I’d give you a sneak preview. Houses from this era are all the rage among young couples and boomers both. They either remodel them—easy to do because of their solid construction and livable floor plans—or, even better, restore them to their ’50s splendor. (By the way, these photos were taken especially for Sarasota Magazine by Lori Sax.)

House No. 1 has a great location—on Main Street, just a few minutes’ walk from downtown. Set on a double lot, it has nearly all its original features, including the original kitchen and wonderful paneling in all the major rooms. It’s priced at $200,000 and is listed by Platinum Home Sales, (941) 556-1470.

House No. 2 is on a premium block in the best part of Southgate. Again, it’s all original and in great shape. Check out the big rooms, tiled ’50s baths, formal dining room, terrazzo floors, etc. It costs $179,000 and is listed by Coldwell Banker, (941) 924-9000. (I have the most awful feeling that this house may have been sold, like, yesterday. Oh, well, enjoy the pics.)

House No. 3 is located in a pleasant older neighborhood called Sherwood Estates, off McIntosh. It has a beautiful lakefront setting, a perfect layout, the original baths, and a great fireplace. Asking price is $172,000 and the listing agent is Michel Bergier, (941) 556-0500.
