Only in Sarasota

Photography by Ted Mase October 1, 2010

Sarasota photographer Ted Mase has shot many silhouettes against the sunset—birds, surfers, lovers. But last winter, out on Lido Beach, he spotted these Amish tourists, who had just arrived from Indiana to visit relatives in Sarasota’s Pinecraft community. "When they all lined up and became transfixed" just as the sun sank into the Gulf, "my heart started racing," says Mase. Dropping to his knee and using a long lens, Mase captured what he says is one of his all-time favorite shots. "Those Old-World figures dressed in black—it was a flashback in time," he says.
