Art

Venice Art Center. An all-media exhibit of Flora and Fauna continues here through Nov. 5; it’s followed by a members’ only show titled Show Us Your Best, Nov. 12 through Dec. 10. 485-7136.

Selby Gallery. This Ringling College gallery space continues to present the annual Faculty Exhibition, Part I, through Nov. 13, with more artwork by staff members and faculty on view at the Willis A. Smith Construction Inc. Galleries on the campus. Opening Nov. 19 to continue through Dec. 8 is Part II of the exhibition, showcasing works in computer animation, fine arts, game art and design, interior design and the CORE studio program. 359-7563.

Dabbert Gallery. A Season of Color, featuring 12 artists including Craig Rubadoux, Nat Krate, Robert Baxter, Barbara Krupp and others, continues at the Palm Avenue gallery through Nov. 29. 955-1315.

St. Armands Circle Art Festival. Approximately 150 artists bring their sculpture, photos, glass, paintings, jewelry and more to the circle for this festival, Nov. 13 and 14. (954) 472-3755.

Art Center Sarasota. The Fiber of Our Being: Uncommon Threads opens here Nov. 18 to run through Jan. 8. On view are works by five culturally diverse women (including Ruth Adler Schnee and Meg Pierce) who have expressed themselves through textiles. Also this month: “Private Eyes,” a tour of homes and private art collections set for Nov. 13. 365-2032.

Ringling Museum of Art. Continuing on view here through Jan. 2: Threads of Gold: Renaissance Tapestries from the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. Through Jan. 30 you can also see Splendid Treasures of the Turkomen Tribes from Central Asia; and through Dec. 13 in the Circus Museum’s Tibbals Learning Center, With the Greatest of Ease, posters of amazing circus feats from the 19th and 20th centuries. 359-5700.

State of the Arts Gallery. The gallery, which recently doubled its space, presents a fall/winter exhibit entitled break through. 955-2787. 

Comedy

Gallagher. That sledgehammer-wielding comedian is back after a bit of an absence (watermelon shortage, perhaps?) at 8 p.m. Nov. 19 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

Film

Cine-World Film Festival. Once again, film lovers of all persuasions converge on little Burns Court Cinema, for the 20th annual festival of international moviemaking. Runs Nov. 5-12. 364-8662 or 955-3456.

Miscellaneous

Pioneer Day. The Historical Society of Sarasota County brings together historic crafts demonstrations, local authors and antique dealers, live music and history tours and talks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 in venues including the Crocker Memorial Church and the Bidwell-Wood House. Music

La Cenerentola. Rossini’s comic opera about a Cinderella-type heroine and her prince continues through Nov. 10 at the Sarasota Opera House. 366-8450.

Key Chorale: Annelies. The choral ensemble offers the regional premiere of a work by James Whitbourn, drawn from the diaries of Anne Frank. Nov. 6 and 7 at the Historic Asolo Theater. 360-7399 or 921-4845.

Benise: The Spanish Guitar. Think Riverdance with a Latin beat, and you’ll get some idea of this show featuring flamenco dancers, violins and yes, the Spanish guitar. At 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

Sarasota Orchestra Masterworks. Violinist Vadim Gluzman joins the orchestra for a program including Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Ravel’s Tzigane and R. Strauss’ Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome, among other works. Nov. 12, 13 and 14 at the Van Wezel. 953-3434.

New Music New College. The contemporary music series presents its first production of John Cage’s Song Books (performed by faculty and students) in more than a decade at College Hall. Lecture/demonstration at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 12; concerts at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14. 487-4888.

Artist Series of Sarasota. The series presents six piano soloists—Arthur Greene, Olga Kleiankina, Xiaofeng Wu, Maxim Mogilevsky, Svetlana Smolina and Dmitri Vorobiev—playing a wide-ranging program of Chopin: Favorites and Rarities, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 16 at the Historic Asolo Theater. 360-7399.

Mannheim Steamroller. The New Age-y musical group rolls back into the Van Wezel with a holiday show at 8 p.m. Nov. 16. 953-3368.

Diana Ross. With more than 40 years of pop hits under her belt, Miss Ross returns to the Van Wezel in concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 17. 953-3368.

Diana Krall. Singer-songwriter-pianist Krall tickles the ivories at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

Sarasota Orchestra: Journeys to Genius. The orchestra’s multimedia series continues with Irving, George and Aaron: Inventing the American Sound, at 4 and 8 p.m. at the Sarasota Opera House. You’ll hear excerpts from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies and a full performance of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. 953-3434.

Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Jazz Christmas 2010. Koz’s friends for this year’s Christmas concert include South African singer/guitarist Jonathan Butler, keyboard man Brian Culbertson and Dutch sax star Candy Dulfer. At 7 p.m. Nov. 26 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

Theater

Rabbit Hole. David Lindsay-Abaire’s wrenching play about a family touched by tragedy ends its run at Venice Theatre’s Stage II on Nov. 7. 488-1115.

Two Gentlemen of Verona. Shakespeare’s early romantic comedy continues through Nov. 14 in an FSU/Asolo Conservatory production at the Cook Theatre. 351-8000.

Nunsensations. What happens when Dan Goggin’s show-biz-loving nuns take on a glitzy Vegas revue? Find out through Nov. 14 at the Manatee Players Riverfront Theatre. 748-5875.

The Wanderers. Travel back in time to the doo wop and pop sounds of the 1950s and early 1960s with this revue, onstage at Florida Studio Theatre’s Goldstein Cabaret through Jan. 1. 366-9000.

Ragtime. The award-winning musical based on E.L. Doctorow’s panoramic book about early 20th-century America fills Venice Theatre’s mainstage Nov. 2-28. 488-1115.

Mummenschanz. The always distinctive pantomime troupe brings its latest blend of whimsy and wonder to the Van Wezel at 8 p.m. Nov. 3. 953-3368.

Legally Blonde: The Musical. The Broadway version of the hit Reese Witherspoon movies brings sorority girl/Harvard law student Elle Woods to the stage at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

I Still (Heart) NY. A musical salute to the Big Apple plays at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre, Nov. 9 through Jan. 2. 366-5454.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. The popular Joe DiPietro-Jimmy Roberts musical about dating, love, marriage and more returns to Florida Studio Theatre, where it first played a decade ago. Onstage Nov. 10 through Jan. 2. 366-9000.

Bonnie & Clyde. The Asolo Repertory Theatre kicks off its season in dramatic style with this Broadway-bound production of a new musical by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, The Civil War), Don Black and Ivan Menchell that brings new life to the legend of those Depression-era outlaws and lovers.
