Good Deal - February 2011

By ericg February 1, 2011

The Place: Cinco de Mayo, 1551 Main St., Sarasota; (941) 917-0043.

The Fare: In a quirky little restaurant with exuberantly painted walls, Cinco de Mayo serves a nice range of traditional and specialty Mexican dishes at lunch and dinner. We’re focusing here on the weekday lunch specials.

The Drill: Have a seat indoors or at a sidewalk table and order the “hot and fast” lunch.

The Bottom Line: For $7.90 you get scented rice and refried beans with your choice of two items from a satisfying list: cheese, beef, spinach or chicken enchiladas, a chicken chimichanga, a pork tamale, or chicken, beef or cheese tacos in hard shells or soft. We like the spinach enchilada with Ranchera sauce and the chicken version with sour cream sauce. The chimi, which is a mini version but plenty at lunch, is good with either. Warm chips and a lively salsa come to table gratis. If you’re really hungry, add a triple-scoop order of a very fine fresh guacamole (and more chips) for the table at $6.95.
