Tis the busy time of year all right. And while I feel I ought to focus on a single topic, there’s just so much I’ve done in the last couple weeks—plus new things coming up—that I’m taking this opportunity to take a step back, make a list of all my recent experiences and get a more complete perspective. Reassuring myself that I actually, y’know, do things. Makes me feel…well, I dunno if I feel “well rounded,” but I certainly have enough weird angles to make some kind of interesting shape.

Saw David Mamet’s Race at FST. Love me some Mamet.

I was “shadowed” for two hours by a Cardinal Mooney student last week. It’s like “scared straight” for those tempted by a life of magazines.

Made a first visit to Mad Crow Brewery. Pork belly-topped deviled eggs, homemade pretzel and beer cheese dip, and crab and hollandaise potato skins.

Also made my first visit to Circus Sarasota. Loved all the acts. Except the parking.

Gave my perspective as “editor” at a SEE Sarasota meeting, wherein I gained an appreciation for the complexities of inter-departmental coordination. I could not be a magazine production manager. Or a salesperson. Or a graphic artist.

Hockey. Incredible to have our whole team together for the last tournament of the season. The off-ice camaraderie makes me want to weep with joy.

Hockey hockey hockey. Frustrating to contend with last-minute (literally) five-on-threes and the Law of Diminishing On-Ice Chemistry.

UFC with Krazy Kevin, Suzy Q and Little J. Topping off a three-game day with pizza and pajamas, watching the fight with friends. That’s my kind of comfort.

Super Bowl party at the Harribles’. Homemade chili and hot dogs.

And we haven’t (thus far) forgotten about the garden, which now has a heartwarming number of sprouts, plus the tomato plants we’re starting inside.

Reading The Handmaid’s Tale, recommended by my mother. Funny when you expect an 18th-century period piece and get a 1984 update. [In posting this, I just learned that The Handmaid's Tale was published in 1985. I'm impressed at A) how totally ignorant I was of its existence, and B) how well Margaret Atwood predicted the future, in the pre-revolution flashbacks. When she talks about how nobody has cash and everybody uses "those little plastic things"? Would not have guessed that she was writing in the early 80s.]

Got tickets to La Bete at Asolo Rep on Wednesday, to be preceded by dinner at Captain Brian’s.

Haircut on Saturday with Mrs. Harrible at the Fashion Focus Hair Academy. Another new adventure.

And then, of course, there’s Valentine’s Day, which is a whole other list of possibilities.
