Art

Selby Gallery. The gallery’s Ringling College Senior Thesis Exhibition ends May 6. It’s followed by Community Exhibitions May 13 through June 13, including works by Women Contemporary Artists and longtime Sarasota watercolorist Herbie Rose. 359-7563.

Venice Art Center. The all-media show Abstraction ends here May 6. Up next: the annual South Sarasota County Schools Art Show, May 7-20. 485-7136.

Longboat Key Center for the Arts. Works by longtime Ringling College instructor Fiore Custode are featured May 10 through July 21 in the Durante Gallery, while artist Nathan Skiles takes over the Cultural Media Room for those same dates. 383-2345.

Ringling Museum of Art. The museum ventures into the hip hop culture with Beyond Bling: Voices of Hip Hop Art, May 21 through Aug. 15. In addition to visual expressions of hip hop, visitors can also see RHAW, performing authentic street dance techniques May 19-21 in the Historic Asolo Theater; and The Word Begins, a theatrical journey of two young men, one white, one black, May 26-28, also in the HAT. 359-5700.

Art Center Sarasota. The center presents Garden: a Collaboration with Nature, which includes photographs by Robert Creamer, large-scale scans of the design of moths by Joseph Sheerer, and a juried, all-media exhibition, May 26 through Aug. 1. In addition, Breathless, a show of ink paintings by Pamela Sumner, is on view May 26 through June 25 and includes performances of new works by the Fuzion Dance Company. 365-2032.

Sarasota Ballet. Spring Surprise, featuring a world premiere by Dominic Walsh, has its last (and season-ending) performance May 1 at FSU Center for Performing Arts. 359-0099 ext. 101.

Operetta Favorites. They’re provided by musicians Mara Bonde, Marc Schreiner and John Fiorito (with ensemble) in a special Artist Series of Sarasota offering, "Remembering Romberg" (that’s composer Sigmund), May 6, 7 and 8 at the Historic Asolo Theater. 360-7399.

Journeys to Genius. Shostakovich: Truth or Consequences. The Sarasota Orchestra’s Journeys series takes a look at the music of this Russian composer, whose work was frequently banned in the Stalin era. At 4 and 8 p.m. May 7 at the Sarasota Opera House. 953-3434.

Sarasota Orchestra Chamber Soiree. Quartet Duo features the Sarasota String Quartet on works by Schubert and Ginastera, May 12 at Holley Hall. 953-3434.

Bora Yoon. Experimental composer and performer Yoon, a Hermitage Retreat artist, creates architectural soundscapes from everyday found objects in a concert at 7:30 p.m. May 12 at the Historic Asolo Theater. 360-7399.

Tartuffe. The FSU/Asolo Conservatory students wrap up their comic exploration of religious hypocrisy with Moliere’s masterpiece, onstage through May 1 in the Cook Theatre. 351-8000.

Victor, Victoria. The gender-bending musical about a woman who entertains onstage as a man ends its run May 1 at the Players Theatre. 365-2494.

The Compleat Works of Wm. Shakespeare: Abridged. Two performers tackle multiple roles in this romp through Shakespeare’s plays, presented through May 1 in a Venice Theatre Stage II production. 488-1115.

Deathtrap. Ira Levin’s enduring hit about a past-his-prime writer with a deadly plan to regain success continues through May 14 at Asolo Rep. 351-8000.

The Innocents. The Asolo Rep presents Steven Drukman’s world premiere play about an unusual family unit challenged by the arrival of two young men. Through May 14. 351-8000.

Las Meninas. Lynn Nottage’s tale of an unlikely romance in the 17th-century royal court of France continues through May 15 at the Asolo Rep. 351-8000.

Hi De, Hi De Ho! Cab Calloway. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe artistic director Nate Jacobs stars as the late, great bandmaster Cab Calloway in this world premiere play with music by Sarasotan Larry Parr. Continuing through May 15 at WBTT. 366-1505.

Honky Tonk Angels. There’s lots of country music and sisterhood in this show about three women on their way to stardom in Nashville. Through May 22 at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre. 366-5454.

Ghost-Writer. The regional premiere of a play by Michael Hollinger, dealing with artistic creation and vicarious love. Playing through May 29 on Florida Studio Theatre’s mainstage. 366-9000.

Laughing Matters: Unconditional Surrender. Local issues are skewered for comic effect in this original show, playing through June 12 on FST’s Goldstein Cabaret stage. 366-9000.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Booker High VPA students close out their theater season with this musical comedy look at middle school students competing in a bee, May 4-7. 355-2967.

Singin’ in the Rain. The stage version of the classic MGM motion picture musical, set in the era when silent films were changing to talkies, brings raindrops to the Manatee Players Riverfront Theatre, May 5-22. 748-5875.

The Passion of the Crawford. Actor John Epperson dons his female character, Lypsinka, to tell a version of the life story of Joan Crawford, in her own words, for two shows May 9 in the Mertz Theatre. An Asolo Rep Extra offering. 351-8000.

The Diary of Anne Frank. Venice Theatre brings to life the familiar story of the Frank family in hiding from the Nazis, May 10-22. 488-1115.

The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. Venice Theatre’s Generations program presents a comic version of the classic Robin Hood story, May 12-22 on the Pinkerton Theatre stage. 488-1115.

Lend Me a Tenor. Anna Maria’s Island Players wind up their 62nd season with the popular Ken Ludwig farce about a famous tenor who may or may not be dead in his hotel room just before an important performance. May 12-22. 778-5755.

George Gershwin Alone. Hershey Felder stars as the legendary American composer in this "play with music," onstage May 19 through June 5 in the Mertz Theatre, an Asolo Rep offering. 351-8000.
