Drive, We Said

The Banyan Theater Company puts the pedal to the metal with Steven Dietz’s comedy, Becky’s New Car. It’s about a typical middle-aged mom whose life could change overnight when a wealthy customer shows up at the car dealership where she works. Banyan favorite Geraldine Librandi plays Becky. June 30 through July 17 at the Cook Theatre; 358-5330 or banyantheatercompany.com.

Grandma’s House

School’s out; circus is in, with Grandma and Friends!, a co-presentation by Circus Sarasota and the Ringling Museum of Art that pairs famed Big Apple clown Grandma (Barry Lubin) with aerialist Dolly Jacobs and other circus stars, Wednesdays through Sundays June 27 through July 31 at the museum’s Historic Asolo Theater. 360-7399 or ringling.org.

Sounds of Summer

If it’s June, it must be (thankfully) the Sarasota Music Festival, which brings us three weeks of classical music concerts from top international students and the faculty artists who are mentoring them. Concerts Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays June 2 through 18. And don’t forget the student recitals—frequently a highlight. 953-3434 or sarasotaorchestra.org.

Honky-Tonk Women

Six women from different backgrounds—think classical music meets country twang—try to put on a show that will save a down-on-its-luck Kansas saloon in Cowgirls, a rollicking romp from Mary Murfitt and Betsy Howie. On Florida Studio Theatre’s mainstage June 8 through July 3; and the actresses really do play those instruments, too. Tickets, 366-9000 or floridastudiotheatre.org.
