Real Estate Junkie - October 2011
Moderne Masterpiece
Built in 1936 by the developer of Cherokee Park, this Art Moderne masterpiece is a rarity in Sarasota. The style set the stage for the Sarasota School of Architecture that has all but vanished, with just a few examples left to recall the kind of glamour that made Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies so much fun to watch.
The house has been updated over the years, but always with an eye toward keeping its wonderful period details. Particularly nice are the corner windows and the strong horizontal lines so characteristic of the style. Inside are four bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. There’s also a detached garage and guest house. Floors are the original wood and terrazzo, as are the moldings and much of the hardware.
Set on a three-quarter acre lot on a wide, expansive street that characterizes the old-fashioned suburban atmosphere of Cherokee Park, the house has an ideal location—close to downtown, the beach, schools and shopping—and is ready to move into.
