LOS LOBOS HEADLINES NOV. 5 AT THE 21ST ANNUAL BLUESFEST.Art

Longboat Key Center for the Arts. The Petticoat Painters exhibition Provocative Petticoats continues through Nov. 10 in the Durante Gallery, with Fresh Paints from three Ringling College illustration grads on view through Dec. 15 in the Cultural Media Room. Opening Nov. 18 to run through Dec. 15: the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society juried show. 383-2345.

Ringling Museum of Art. Continuing on view here through Jan. 29 is The Amazing American Circus Poster: The Strobridge Lithographing Company, 1878-1939. Zimoun, featuring the mechanized kinetic sculptures of that Swiss artist, remains on view through Jan. 8; Josef Albers: Colors, an exhibit of color studies, continues through Jan. 16. Art Center Sarasota. Material Matters: New and Innovative Materials fills Gallery 2 here Nov. 3 through Dec. 31, with works of Sarasota architect Mark Weston in Gallery 1, an encaustic exhibition in Gallery 3, and an open, juried, all-media Material World exhibit in Gallery 4. 365-2032.

Comedy

Capitol Steps. Based on recent and current news from Washington, the comedy troupe should have plenty of political material to work with in their latest stop in town, at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at Van Wezel. 953-3368.

Bob Saget. Family-friendly TV star Saget brings his more adult-oriented standup act to the Van Wezel with a program “Rated R-ish,” at 8 p.m. Nov. 19. 953-3368.

 

Dance

Sarasota Orchestra Chamber Soiree. This small ensemble concert features works by Turner, Maslanka and Schumann, Nov. 3 at Holley Hall. 953-3434.

Sarasota Blues Fest. The 21st annual fest takes place Nov. 5 on a site directly across from Ed Smith Stadium. Headliners Los Lobos are joined by 2011 Grammy Award nominee Ryan Shaw, Shaun Murphy, Lightnin’ Malcolm and child prodigies Mike Imbasciani and Alex Shaw. Theater

Seussical. The Players’ production of this musical version of interlocking Dr. Seuss stories has been extended through Nov. 6; call 365-2494.

Jerry’s Girls. Broadway composer Jerry Herman, his hits and the stars who appeared in them all receive their due in this musical revue, onstage through Nov. 13 at the Manatee Players Riverfront Theatre. 748-5875.

That’s Life Again. A world premiere show from Florida Studio Theatre’s Richard Hopkins, Rebecca Hopkins and Jim Prosser continues as the opener of the theater’s cabaret season, through Dec. 25. 366-9000.

The Brothers Karamazov. It takes the entire second-year FSU/Asolo Conservatory class to tackle Dostoyevsky’s epic tale of brothers struggling with issues of family and religion, Nov. 1-20, opening the Cook Theatre season. 351-8000.

Big River. Take a trip down the mighty Mississippi with Huck Finn and Jim in this Roger Miller musical, onstage at Venice Theatre Nov. 1-27. 488-1115.

Next to Normal. The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama (also a Tony winner for Best Musical Score) about a family troubled by mental illness makes its area premiere Nov. 2 through Jan. 2 on Florida Studio Theatre’s mainstage. 366-9000.

Radio Gals. A quintet of singer/musicians entertains a small town with their 1920s radio show in this musical comedy by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick. Onstage in Venice Theatre’s cabaret series Nov. 4-27. 488-1115.
