PARKINSON'S PROJECT

People with Parkinson Disease are faced with a number of problems, including mobility, caregiver stress, transportation, family interactions and, most distressing, uncertainty about the future. Many patients are not even aware of the questions that they should be asking. That is where the Neuro Challenge Foundation comes in.

A locally based nonprofit, NCF is dedicated to helping PD patients and their families in the Sarasota/Manatee area by offering education, programs and advisors. With recent visits from the co-founder of the Micahel J. Fox Foundation and the medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation, NCF has been applauded by specialists from around the nation as the model for PD care.

Each year, NCF provides education to patients, caregivers and professionals at a number of large seminars. One of these seminars, the Annual Suncoast PD Symposium, is presented in partnership with Sarasota Memorial Care System. It draws one of the largest audiences in the nation and includes a plethora of specialists drawn from places like Stanford, Cleveland Clinic, Georgetown, Cornell and Harvard, all there to discuss the latest treatments and studies.

In addition to these renowned seminars, NCF is well known for its award-winning Integrative Medicine Program which offers activities like yoga, Tai-Chi, water aerobics and cycling classes, all designed for PD patients. These unique approaches to treatment are part of NCF’s “community collaborations for a cause,” which include partnerships with SMH HealthPlex and The Sarasota Y to provide exercise programs for patients with Parkinson’s and, soon, people with a number of different neurological challenges.

TOP PERFORMER

In September, Doctors Hospital was named one of the nation’s top performers on Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission for heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care—one of 405 hospitals nationwide to receive this honor and the only hospital in the Sarasota/Manatee area to be recognized.

With this honor, Doctors Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of its Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program. This program is aimed to help patients experiencing a heart attack to be treated within 90 minutes of arriving at the hospital.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota is a 155-bed acute and general care facility serving Sarasota and Manatee counties. The Emergency Room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week by board-certified emergency physicians.
