Rugs As Art Honored at International Rug Market

John Murse, co-owner of Sarasota area rug emporium Rugs as Art, accepted a Retailer of the Year Award presented by AmericasMart and the Oriental Rug Importers Association (ORIA) on Friday, January 13, as [art of the annual America’s Magnificent Carpets Awards (AMCA) during the International Rug Market in Atlanta, GA.

Rugs as Art, shared the stage with mega-retailers Jordan’s of Boston and Macy’s (whose rug departments nationwide are operated by The Mink Companies). The retail awards honored the three companies considered America’s top rug retailers for 2012 by industry peers. In addition to the awards ceremony, AmericasMart featured a three-page article on Rugs as Art in its market magazine distributed to 40,000 retailers and manufacturers.

Blue Fish

This ceramic Blue Fish Bottle is among the bold, beautiful options available at Living Walls Furniture and Design. Measured at 15 inches by 8.5 inches by 40 high, “it is quite a statement piece,” says Living Walls interior designer Sunny Thomas. “It’s tall, so it looks great sitting on the floor in an empty corner or an area that needs dimension or color. It could go on a console table/mantle that needs height added to it.”

Landscape Artistry

John Lay, general manager of ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance & Design, describes three hot landscape trends right now. “We’re receiving more requests for water features and hardscapes,” he says, “so that clients are enjoying the outdoors on a new level.” Second, the recession-made thriftiness is starting to dissipate. We’re experiencing a shift back to a focus on quality design and customer service; the lowest bidder is taking a backseat,” says Lay. Lastly, ArtisTree’s comprehensive and detailed landscape designs are actually winning construction bids for local luxury builders, he adds. “We’re seeing that customers are focusing as much on the beauty and functionality of the outdoor landscape as they are on the interior amenities of their new home.”
