A House With History

If only the walls could talk in this 1949 Cherokee Park home. Built for a circus attorney named Eagle—he represented many of the Munchkins who appeared in The Wizard of Oz—the house has a gracious, old-fashioned feel with all sorts of hard-to-find period details. Rumor says it was designed by one of those famed Sarasota architects, Ralph or William Zimmerman.

Among the special touches: ironwork from Kreissle Forge, a fireplace, wood-paneled ceilings, terrazzo floors with art deco borders, the original flamboyant Florida baths, Cuban tile in the living room and dining room and a retro kitchen inspired by Julia Child’s own kitchen, now in the Smithsonian. And the porthole in the front door comes from the Papa John, a famous local schooner that burnt and sank off Harbor Acres in 1963.

At 2,633 square feet, with three bedrooms and three baths, it’s a great family home. The large lot has plenty of room for a pool and sits on one of the highest points in town. You’ll be within walking distance of Southside Village and five minutes from downtown. And if you hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet some night, don’t worry. It’s just the Munchkins, back for their residual checks.

2516 Mulberry Terrace. $549,000.
