SPRING'S HOTTEST BAG :: The Satchel

By Megan McDonald February 24, 2012

Need a cure for your baggage?  Want a chic new handbag to hold your dear things near?  If you’re like me and get a little bagitated with your Fall tote around this time of year, then consider the latest reinvention in the fashion world, now the hottest arm candy for Spring: the satchel.

Marc Jacobs :: Very tidy, this boxed pebbled leather Crosby Thompson is part satchel and part pochette for the girl who likes a little structure in her. I’m really drawn to the punch of bright sunflower color, but it does come in other hues like tangerine and navy blue.  Plus, a colorful accessory can upgrade any outfit.

If there’s an “It” bag of the moment, it’s this one.  Proenza Schouler’s PS1 is on the highly covetable list. With the double luggage straps and front fold, this bag is not so slouchy but not too structured – perfect everyday.  And, options are plenty -- you can find it in more than ten colors, mostly in leather, but also suede and python, as well as four sizes.

Here’s some of the PS1 colors celebs are sporting:

See by Chloe :: Canvas schoolbag satchel with contrasting black leather trim.  Wear it three ways: top handle, shoulder or cross-body for a sportier look. Chic, simple, stylish.

The Alexander Wang Large Emile satchel :: Not sure if it’s the four metal corner footings or the interesting geometric shaping, but I really dig it. Emile has style and substance and would make a great come-fly-with-me travel bag for all your goodies.

The cacophony of color on this Tory Burch 797 Satchel is fabulous! It says sophistication without taking yourself too seriously.  It’s simply brimming with cool.

Are you the kinda girl whose handbag doubles as a briefcase?  This double drop handled Pashli Satchel by 3.1 Phillip Lim may be your new obsession. I like that it has a little edge to it, so practical doesn’t mean boring and you can toughen up a sugar & spice style. And, good news -- no shoulder strap to temp you to toss a heavy bag over those aching shoulders of yours….

Like a little more slouch in your satchel but don’t want to sacrifice style?  This Gym Bag by Reed Krakoff has plenty of both and it’s completely luxe.  And if you are a fashionable packrat who likes to carry almost everything with you, this bag is for you. There are definitely more color options (solid and combination), and don’t let the “Gym Bag” name fool you – it’s a sporty, everyday, usefully chic purse at 10.2” tall x 12.6” wide x 6.7” deep that’s been seen on the arms of January Jones and Claire Danes.

I don’t know when the Balenciaga City Bag went from the “It” bag years ago to a classic, but it did in fact happen. The major selling point is that it’s a solid choice for those who like to invest in a bag with staying power. And it’s a little rock-'n'-roll, so it has the day-to-night factor.

Speaking of investments (I know you’ve heard me say it before…), leopard is always a dependable, it doesn’t ever seem to go out of fashion. And nobody does a leopard print like Dolce & Gabbana. Here they’ve done it on naturalist straw with a handsome tubular camel leather handle that is lovely in hand or draped over your forearm.

What's your It Bag of choice? Are you coveting any of these bags for Spring?
