NAIL FILES :: Look Polished

By Megan McDonald March 23, 2012

Taking a cue from the runway shows to the front-row seats to the street stylists, nail art is your best new accessory. Not to point fingers, but if you’re tentative, start with your toes to try it on for size. For the nail junkies, here are some playful to chic concepts to keep you on your nail game…

By the way, there’s a new shape to take note of: the rounded point, which you can see here on Adele (once you get past her engagement ring…). Also, notice the red polish underneath in the left photo.

Putting a little fun at your fingertips…

OK, I know you’ve heard me mention my attraction to the witty mustache trend…here's an easy tutorial on how to don the handsome little fella on your nails.

For those addicted to the Angry Birds app.  And I’m absolutely guilty. Not sure if I continue to play for the game itself or to hear the totally committed giggle the feathery friends make as they sling-shot out in search of greatness…

Inspired by the runways…

Neatly tailored nail art by Behnaz Sarafpour. Really, you could try this with any color at the tip.

Cristina of Let Them Have Polish told Stylelist how to get this look, inspired by Mondo Guerra’s Project Runway Season 8 finale dress:

First, apply three coats of Maybelline Colorama in Cupid's Wing, then Zoya nail polish in Raven to create dots in various sizes. Try dipping polish in a bobby pin or small pencil to perfect the dot shape if your hands aren't as steady. Once dry, Cristina stuck on strips of tape cut with a wavy craft scissors and painted the black corners to mimic the side panels of the dress. She finished with two coats of Hard Candy Matte-ly in Love.

OBESSSED with this rocker look created by Samantha of The Nailasaurus, inspired by a Michael Kors sheath. Can’t wait to try this….

Inspired by this MICHAEL Michael Kors Studded Sheath Dress; W7 nail polish in Black; Gosh Top Coat; N.Y.C. Top Coat; Samantha of The Nailasaurus' studded manicure, courtesy of Styelist

Here’s how to get it – Paint on W7 Nail Polish in Black as your base color. Then apply Gosh High Shine Top Coat and stick on tiny gold studs using a toothpick before the lacquer dries. Seal with N.Y.C. New York Color Extra Shiny Top Coat.

As for nail color, it stays in step with spring’s ready to wear lines…

Kinda crazy about saturated hot pink these days…

Seems like everyone is referring to this color as Tangerine Tango…

Often associated with depth and stability, blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, truth, and heaven.  OK, I’m in.

Go with pistachio green for a nonchalant cool.

Then there’s Magnetic polish by Nails Inc. – the first time I saw it was on Elisabeth Waters, it was entirely cool. And it was so easy, she did it herself.

The polish contains magnetic particles, so while it’s still wet, you hold the (included) magnet over the nail, creating metallic 3D designs.
