Why Men Should Pay More Attention to their Gums

Research shows that periodontal disease is more prevalent in men than women, and men lose more teeth on average than women.

This may be caused by a lack of action when it comes to oral hygiene. Research published in the Journal of Periodontology found that women are almost twice as likely as men to have received a regular dental check-up in the past year, and women were more likely than men to schedule suggested treatment following those dental check-ups. Furthermore, men have worse indicators of periodontal health than women, including higher incidence of dental plaque, tartar and bleeding on probing. This may be because women are three times more likely to floss every day than men.

A man’s health may be uniquely impacted by periodontal disease as well. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other inflammatory conditions. Research has suggested that the following conditions may be associated with periodontal disease in men, making it important that men diligently maintain periodontal health.

Dr. Thomas Rubino, a periodontist in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, is happy to perform a complimentary periodontal evaluation, to assess your periodontal health by examining your teeth, plaque, gums, bite, bone structure and any risk factors you may have. By assessing your oral health on an annual basis, you and Dr. Rubino will be better able to notice any conditions, such as periodontal disease, that may need additional treatment. Call the office today for a complimentary periodontal evaluation at (941) 792-0029 or visit bradentonperio.com for more information.

Is It a Heart Attack?

At just 49-years-old, Eleanor Coupland had a heart attack. As a nurse she knew the symptoms, but never thought it could happen to her. “We all have a little sense of denial. I had chest pain and this intense pain in my jaw,” she said. “But I ignored it.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among American women, according to the American Heart Association. In fact, it kills more women than breast cancer every year.

“Women can have chest pain as a heart attack symptom,” says Coupland’s cardiologist, Dr.

Anthony Pizzo of Bradenton Cardiology Center. “However, it's important for women to recognize that chest tightness or pain may not appear, as cardiac warning signs in women differ from men.

 Female heart attack symptoms include:

  Shortness of breath

Chest discomfort

Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting

Sweating

Unexplained fatigue or weakness

Pressure in the lower chest, often confused for indigestion

Back pain

Now at 66-years-old and with a recently implanted bi-ventricular defibrillator, Coupland says she is feeling great. This summer she plans to travel across Canada with her husband in an RV. Coupland has this advice for other women: “When in doubt, check it out.” Dr. Pizzo agrees saying, “It is better to be safe than sorry. If the symptoms are caused by something else, that is even better. I would much rather diagnose a patient with indigestion than a heart attack.”
