Real Estate Junkie: Whistling Dixie

By Bob Plunket July 1, 2012

10,000-square-foot waterfront estate in the best part of BradentonIf J.R. Ewing were ever to move the family from Southfork to Florida, this 10,000-square-foot waterfront estate in the best part of Bradenton would be the perfect choice. Spanish Med it’s not; the style here is Greek Revival meets Neo-Georgian, and the Southern feeling is everywhere, from the five-car garage facing the motor court to the dock and boathouse that are right on the Manatee River.

Inside the home is traditional the way all proper Southern homes are, but with an eye toward the fancy flourish and the upscale touch. There’s an elaborate double curving stairway, a two-story living room with an upper gallery, fireplaces everywhere, and enough over-the-top window treatments to keep Scarlett O’Hara well-dressed for years to come. Our favorite room is the one with the 40-foot-long bar and steak-house-sized banquettes—a Texas-sized family room and watering hole that cries out for a poker game with your fellow oil barons.

6280 Riverview Blvd., Bradenton. $8.85 million. With five bedrooms, seven baths and a guest apartment, there’s plenty of room for everyone. You’ll also find a home theater, paneled library and a tool- and TV-packed man cave for the good ol’ boy. The entire acre-plus is fenced and gated, and the location—right across from historic Emerson Point—is an easy jaunt on the yacht to the open Gulf and Tampa Bay. With all due respect to the Democrats, this may well be the most Republican house in Florida—American to its core, and with a price tag ($8.85 million) that only the 1 percent can afford.
