McClellan Park Vintage Charmer

By Robert Plunket September 20, 2012

How cute is this! A storybook cottage in the perfect neighborhood, just a short walk to Morton’s Market and Southside Village. Built in 1925, it’s got great period details: rolled eaves on the roof, the original front door with wrought-iron trim, wood floors, a wood-burning fireplace, arched doorways, a beamed and vaulted ceiling in the living room—the list goes on and on.

Inside you’ll find a classic cottage floor plan, with two bedrooms—but just one bath. The living room is relatively large (13 by 20 feet) and there’s a family room (originally the dining room?). The new dining area is attached to the kitchen and looks out onto the back porch and back yard. With a total size of almost 1,300 square feet, the house feels adequate, but still retains the intimate scale of a 1920s cottage.

Bathroom needs work.

It looks like the kitchen, dining area and bath got a makeover circa 1980, and these areas are the ones that feel dated, not the original 1920s stuff. The orange counter top in the kitchen has to go, and the neo-knotty pine paneling you’ll probably at least want to paint white. The bathroom has good 1920s bones but needs restoration. And the back yard looks sad at the moment, but it’s nothing some good landscaping couldn’t change. All in all, some easy changes and you’ll have a contender for cutest cottage in the cutest neighborhood.
