Your Weekend Top 5

1. Rain or shine, get ready to chill tonight at the Hangar at Flight Source with pop star Jon Secada. (It’s moved indoors from the bayfront Powel Crosley Mansion due to inclement weather.) The Chillounge Night folks bring their chic outdoor lounge furniture to Flight Source for a “Return to Romance”: food, drinks, a Prosecco bar, pre-concert music by Lotus Fire, and the main event, a concert by Grammy Award-winner Jon Secada himself. Tickets at chilloungenight.com.

2. Broadway stars with big pipes touch down in Sarasota this weekend. Tonight, Ron Bohmer (Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard) and Sara Jean Ford (A Little Night Music, Finian’s Rainbow) serenade you at the Golden Apple Celebrity Theatre. They mark the start of the theater’s New York Cabaret series. Candlelight dinner and the show for $43. And Saturday and Sunday, the marvelous Faith Prince (Bells are Ringing, Guys and Dolls) visits the Historic Asolo Theater thanks to the Artist Series Concerts.

3. Something’s fishy in the historic fishing village of Cortez this weekend as 20,000-plus folks descend upon it for the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival. Live music, art and educational exhibits, and tons of fresh-from-the-boat seafood.

4. And speaking of old Florida, famed nature photographer Clyde Butcher celebrates the 20th anniversary of his Big Cypress Gallery in the Everglades with three days of guided swamp tours and talks by park rangers. Reserve your swamp walk here. If you don’t have time for the day trip, check out Butcher’s hauntingly beautiful Florida nature photography at his Venice studio, open Tuesdays through Fridays.

5. Next up for the Sarasota Opera: a dangerous forbidden love triangle plays out in Georges Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers. It’s the company’s first mounting of the popular opera since 2003.

Next Week

Love, hatred, homophobia and the difficulties of living life fully are explored in Stop Kiss, the newest play from the talented students of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory, opening Tuesday night. That’s also pay-what-you-can night.

Kathy Halenda returns to Florida Studio Theatre Tuesday for a limited engagement of her enormously popular one-woman musical tribute, Brassy Broads of Broadway. Yes, that means you’ll be hearing from Mama Rose, Dolly Levi and Fanny Brice. Through Feb. 24 only.

The Home Builders Association of Manatee and Sarasota Counties presents its annual Parade of Homes Feb. 23-March 10; your chance to tour models from some of the area’s best home builders.
