Teams of all ages and skill levels compete at the new Nathan Benderson Park.

Sarasota rejoiced at the recent news that Nathan Benderson Park will be the site of the 2017 World Rowing Championship, beating out Plovdid, Bulgaria, for the honor. More than 40,000 elite athletes from all over the world will descend on Sarasota and Manatee counties sometime that fall for the biggest rowing event outside of the Olympics.

It's a triumph for the nonprofit Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Association, which oversees the new Nathan Benderson Park's day-to-day operations. The 600-acre park, located just west of I-75 south of University Parkway, is being developed with private and public funds to become North America's premier 2,000-sprint course and regatta center. Racing lanes, coaching lanes, a multifunction boathouse and athlete training center, grandstands and a state-of-the-art boat maintenance and testing facility have been built or are planned.

The big news comes on the heels of the USRowing Masters Championships last summer, where some 2,000 rowers competed for honors.
