The interior design equivalent to comfort food, wing chairs are soaring in popularity again. Ultra-comfortable and body-hugging, these sculptural beauties have been around since the 17th century when their wingbacks were functional, blocking out cold drafts and retaining heat from crackling fires. Wing chairs were de rigueur in 18th-century gentlemen’s clubs, and they resurfaced in mid-20th- century modern adaptations. Introduced at Salone del Mobile 2013 in Milan, the Ro chair by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for the Republic of Fritz Hansen (from $3,272) takes the wing chair as a modern comfort zone.
