After World War II, many Americans headed to Florida in sleek Airstream trailers for a sunny winter sojourn. In Sarasota, their home was the fairgrounds at Ringling Boulevard and Tuttle, and for one week in February, they still converge there today. Illustrator John Pirman happened upon “the bullet-shaped, shimmering aluminum trailers all lined up in multiple rows, reflecting the winter sunshine,” and decided the annual pilgrimage makes “an amazing sight,” one that evokes the eternal romance of the American road trip.
