Behind the Scenes: Get to Know Heather Dunhill
You know self-described "fashion blogger and style spectator" Heather Dunhill as the voice behind this blog and her monthly Sarasota Magazine column of the same name. But what you may not know is that her fashion cred spreads far beyond the streets of Sarasota--in fact, her work as fashion editor for the popular international website IWantToBeAnAlt.com is part of an international sartorial dialogue. In her role at I Want To Be An Alt, Heather reviews each issue of Vogue Paris, comments on Vogue Paris editor Emanuelle Alt's personal style and shares her take on current French fashion and beauty trends.
"Heather is a witty and sophisticated writer who imbues her words with her joie de vivre," says I Want To Be An Alt editor-in-chief Kellina de Boer, "and readers especially look forward to her monthly reviews of Vogue Paris."
Recently, the tables were turned on Heather--read on for an interview with her by I Want To Be An Alt managing editor Paul Kolyer, in which she shares everything from her guilty pleasure of the moment to her favorite beauty product and the five pieces she's coveting for fall.
IWTB Interview: Heather DunhillBy Paul Kolyer
Emmanuelle Alt seems to have no vices, would you share a pleasure you have to have?
I’m having a bourbon moment—Angels & Envy rye is my new vice. Loving it paired with San Pellegrino’s sparkling Pomelo—divine!
Favorite music?
Uh. This is a tough one for me—my iPod is buzzing with a mélange of everything from Edith Piaf to Iggy Pop to Lissy Trullie to The Clash to Eminem to Rodrigo y Gabriela to Cab Calloway to Jay-Z to Pink Martini to Van Morrison to A$AP Rocky to Dusty Springfield to Lorde to Lynyrd Skynyrd… and to my all-time fave female songbird, Nina Simone.
Who would you love to see on the cover of Vogue Paris?
Major crush on Lou Doillon!
What do you like best about Vogue Paris?
What I like best is the fresh and modern direction they’ve taken of late… the tome has been reinvigorated and I find myself looking forward to every issue. It hits all the marks for what we want when following French fashion!
Who is the IWTBAA reader?
I’m convinced the IWTBAA reader is the chicest of the chic. He or she can name the hero buys for every season off the top of their head and they know how to pronounce Ann Demeulemeester without a stumble...
Fave beauty product or ritual?
Trish McEvoy’s Instant Eye Lift — if you haven’t tried it run to a counter. Right. Now. It’s more than a concealer, it instantly brightens the triangle under your eyes for the I’ve-had-the-best-night’s-sleep-ever look.
Emmanuelle Alt avoids skirts, what is taboo in your wardrobe or style?
Nude stockings--if I must, I opt for nude fishnets instead.
What designers inspire you?
So easy! Olivier Rousteing, Haider Ackermann, Isabel Marant, Philip Treacy, Hedi Slimane, Nicolas Ghesquière and Sarah Burton. And, if you haven’t seen Jemma Wynne jewels, be prepared to fall!
If you could lunch with any fashion muses who would you choose?
Loulou de la Falaise, period. Only exception would be if Isabella Blow could make it
What are your "go to" pieces now and when do you rely on them?
My ultra fave — a vintage emerald green Lanvin necklace is the piece I grab when something’s just not working with an outfit. It always seems to pull a look together, just right.
Chanel’s mod white nail color, Eastern Light
With autumn right around the corner, which pieces would you buy with a blank check?
Oh, I’m so ready for this question...
- 1. Edie Parker clutch
- 2. Cartier Panther ring
- 3. Entire Saint Laurent collection from capes to boots; thankyouverymuch
- 4. Lanvin Floral Velvet Minaudiere
- 5. Necker Island (well, you did say blank check and there’s nothing more fashionable than having your own island…)
