Only in Sarasota: Bird Key Yacht Club
Illustrator John Pirman admires the Bird Key Yacht Club.
In 1959, the Bird Key Yacht Club opened. Since then, the building, which was designed in the Colonial Bahamian style, has undergone a number of renovations, most recently in 2011 by architect Jack Meredith of Design Aesthetics. On a recent visit, John Pirman admired the club’s nautical air, from the pelican weather vane atop the entrance to the clerestory windows and decorative eaves, which he says cast dramatic shadows in the afternoon sun. “It was a moment in time I wanted to capture,” he says.
