A new kind of market is coming to downtown Sarasota's Rosemary District.

Every third Saturday of the month, a group of artists, farmers, bakers, craftspeople and entertainers  will gather at 701 Cohen Way for the Rosemary District Indie Market as a way to celebrate the up-and-coming neighborhood and Sarasota's thriving arts community.

The market is the brainchild of Ashley Rogers, whose Canned Ham Vintage sells vintage clothing, furniture and more out of its Rosemary District shop. She says the idea arose when she realized that there was nothing like this in Sarasota.

"I'd be driving to markets and shows going, 'Why don't we have this in Sarasota? Why am I packing up my whole shop and driving an hour?'" Rogers recalls. "We got tired of not working on our own community."

Rogers says she's planning for the market to take place year-round, not just during season. And "every month, we'll have new vendors," she says, "so there will always be something fresh."

"We're not a farmers market, a flea market or a craft show--we're a place where you will find the most random, awesome stuff," she continues. "We don't fit into a box."

This month, market-goers shoppped goods from Geraldson Community Farm, Kari Bee Designs, Al's Wood, Sunshine Canning, Orange Grove Vintage and more. Each market will have a food truck, and there will be live entertainment, as well. Parking is free.

"I really want people to realize that this is homegrown," Rogers says. "By coming to the market, you're supporting artists and small businesses in Sarasota."

The next Rosemary District Indie Market takes place Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m at 701 Cohen Way, Sarasota. For more info, visit www.rosemaryindiemarket.com
